Being a published author of an autobiography is frightful. Seeing your name on the worldwide web, in press releases and on the cover of a book found in bookstores, and reading reviews on Amazon is mind-blowing. It’s also most humbling. Especially when the topic is all about “the real you.” Transparency with my life is something I’ve grown comfortable with over the years…Patsy Behrman did it to me. I must say I learned more from her openness as a teacher at Rhema Bible Training College than any other instructor I’ve ever had. Being under scrutiny of the public eye has never been easy, but I find that it’s the safest place to be. There, is the place of honesty.
Growing up performing as a theater actress was fun; being on stage was “safe” because I wasn’t “me.” I “was” the character in the script. But when I sat in Patsy’s classes and saw her stand in front me and 1,499 others while baring her soul on some things, I was transformed into a place of transparency that I never dreamed possible. Because, she put the Word of God first. She shared from her heart, and coupled it with scriptures from the Bible – so everything all of a sudden started to make sense.
That’s the deal with the Bible! It all makes sense when we are truly transparent, not trying to be someone we’re not; we ingest it and apply it to our lives. We stop trying to be someone else – a player on a stage. We let Him in…into every nook and darkened, damp cranny of our hearts and He can work His healing balm on our old scars and fresh gaping wounds. He turns stale lunch into colorful and exhilarating moments with Him.
Being transparent in my book “No One Could Know” was one of the easiest things I’ve ever done in my life. As shameful of a story as it is, I know being “real” is where it’s at with God if anyone is ever going to get anywhere in life. I challenge you to read my book, if you haven’t, with this in mind: what areas of your heart have you been hiding from God? Maybe your life’s story is nothing like mine. But chances are, your heart story is very much like mine in some way. You’ve had a free-fall and are waiting for your feet to find earth again. Perhaps you don’t realize it, but that happens to us every time we step into our day without putting God first. The sooner we climb onto His Word, we can soar above the mess with Him.
He’s real. He loves you. And he’s patiently waiting for you to put Him first. If you never have, I dare you to make God and His Word a priority in your personal time. Can’t you sense Him inviting you to get to know Him better? Even those who’ve known Him all their lives are still only truly fulfilled when they let His love open the door to their hearts. Open the door, and let Him in.
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” – Jesus Christ, Revelation 3:20
